Bunnings’ boost for battery recycling
AS REVEALED LAST month, Bunnings New Zealand is rolling out a National Battery Recycling Program for Kiwi retail and trade customers.
Bunnings New Zealand Director Ben Camire says the program is part of Bunnings’ commitment to sustainability as well as providing a convenient solution for customers to recycle their used batteries.
Mirroring the battery recycling program introduced across Australia late last year, the program is being rolled out across Bunnings’ 49 New Zealand sites this month.
The battery collection units have been specially designed to accept power tool batteries, as well as standard alkaline, carbon zinc and lithium household batteries, and will be located at the front entrance of each Bunnings site.
No car batteries or products with embedded batteries are accepted at the collection points.
Once the program is established across all stores, Bunnings hopes to receive 50kg worth of batteries per store per month meaning over 29 tonnes of batteries are expected to be diverted from landfill over a 12-month period.
As it has in Australia, Bunnings has partnered with Aussie battery recycling specialist Envirostream to manage the collection and recycling process.
The only downside is that with no current onshore processing at scale for battery recycling in New Zealand, the batteries will have to be transported to Australia for processing.
