Value of building work put in place – March 2022 quarter
Residential building work was +22.8% on the March 2021 quarter at $5.6 billion, with non-residential +14.3% at $2.5 billion.
By region, the biggest growth in the actual values of total building work in the December 2021 quarter were as follows: rest of the North Island (+28%); Auckland (+23%); rest of the South Island (+19%); Canterbury (+14%); Wellington (+13%); and Waikato (+11%).
APRIL 2022 BUILDING CONSENTS
Consents for the April 2022 month from Stats NZ followed a mega March.
By value, the April 2022 numbers were as follows:

By volume, 3,719 dwellings were

April 2021), 2,066 of which were multi- unit homes, comprising townhouses, apartments, retirement village units, and granny flats.
For the year to date April 2022, consent values were as follows:
• Residential:$22.3billion(+24.4%on
YTD April 2021)
• Non-residential:$8.5billion(+11.4%)
• Total:$30.8billion(+20.5%).
In the year ended April 2022, 50,583 new dwellings were consented (+18% on YTD April 2021), led by Canterbury (+34%), Wellington (+19%), and Auckland (+18%).
Most noteworthy again were the 25,687 multi-unit homes consented in the year ended April 2022 (+33% on YTD April 2021), compared to the 24,896 standalone houses (+5.7%).
YTD April 2022, growth in the consent value of non-residential buildings was driven by factories (+22%), and storage buildings (+21%).
Stats NZ’s May 2022 building consent data is scheduled for release on 1 July while the June 2022 quarter’s Value
of Building Work put in Place is due on 5 September, so look to www. hardwarejournal.co.nz for the most timely updates.
