Thanks for bearing with us!
THANK YOU TO everyone who joined us on 10 May to celebrate the much-disrupted Hardware Awards and network with their peers!
Thanks also to our sponsors, the judges, and everyone who nominated a store, a team or an individual.
Thanks also to those who stuck with it, despite the challenging times, followed through and turned their nominations into entries, and to those who made the final shortlists.
To cap off the program, see our extensive celebration of the winners and Finalists starting on page 20 in this issue of NZ Hardware Journal.
Post-event, feedback suggests
the industry clearly still values an independent program like the Hardware Awards, but we will continue to take comments and suggestions on board for a while yet, so do feel free to get in touch.
The big question being asked so far has been can we squeeze another program into 2022 to bring the Hardware Awards back into sync?
The answer to that is regrettably no.
Bearing in mind everything else
that is happening in and around the hardware channel currently – and recognising the stresses associated with
those disruptions – the next Hardware Awards will kick off this year but they will conclude in 2023.
The plan at this moment is that we will be launching the next Hardware Awards program in August this year.
And, if all goes to plan, they will culminate at a Gala Dinner in Auckland on Wednesday 8 March 2023.
We will bring you regular further updates as the program develops.
WARMTH – BUT NOT AT ANY COST?
Talking about stresses and planning, recognising the strain the building industry is under, MBIE has been considering postponing the H1/AS1 energy efficiency changes that were due to come into effect this November.
Industry players having successfully lobbied Government, MBIE has been asking if a 6-month delay is an appropriate response (see page 4 for more on this).
Proponents of the changes see any delay as a missed opportunity.
Others also see the benefits but recognise too that they come with significant extra costs.
Gauging the views and outlooks of a variety of builders for our annual Trade Focus feature (see page 14), it is no secret that the consumer will bear these costs.
It is less clear whether the extra cost of building a warmer and more efficient new home – on top of an already inflationary situation – will further detract from consumer confidence an already softening marketplace.
