MBIE moves on plasterboard substitution
hard news
IN A MAY communication, the Construction Sector Accord has revealed that MBIE is seeking a “smoother path” for the use of substitute plasterboard.
Designed to add options to widen the current pinch point with plasterboard, MBIE is said to be working towards allowing the use of substitute plasterboard products at a time when the availability of the most commonly specified product is extremely limited and widely recognised as a key factor holding up many projects.
One of Construction Sector Accord’s regular email updates says that MBIE officials are working with Building Consent Authorities (BCAs) “to try and achieve a more consistent approach
by BCAs on treating substitution of plasterboard products as a minor variation to consents.”
The e-newsletter reports that John Sneyd, MBIE General Manager Building System Performance, talking at May’s
Construction Sector Accord Forum, recognised that there was “a need for national consistency and clarity” amongst BCAs on amendments to consents.
Says the Accord e-newsletter: “He said MBIE officials are working to smooth the path for use of alternative plasterboard
products so that they can be used with confidence.”
Officials will work with BRANZ, designers and BCAs to better understand minimum information requirements for allowing the use of substitute products.
