“March 2021 consent volumes hit an all-time high, with massive gains all round – albeit off a low base”
month (+44.7% on March 2020), which is an all-time high for the series, surpassing the October 1973 figure of 4,081.
This was driven by a record-breaking month for both standalone houses (2,438, topping $1 billion in value for the first time in a single month) and townhouses, flats, and units (1,243).
March’s non-residential consents were boosted by Winstone Wallboards’ $100 million Tauranga factory, notes Stats NZ.
For the year to date (YTD) March 2021, consent values were as follows:
• Residential: $17.2 billion (+9.1% on
YTD March 2019).
• Non-residential: $7.5 billion
(+5.3%).
• Total: $24.7 billion (+7.4%).
By volume, 41,028 dwellings were consented in YTD March 2021 (+9.1% on YTD March 2020), beating the previous record of 40,025 in the year ended February 1974.
The annual number of new homes consented in Auckland also hit a record of 17,495 (+17% on YTD March 2020), representing almost 43% percent of all new homes nationwide.
Other regions also saw record numbers of new homes consented in the year ended March 2021, including Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Manawatū-Whanganui, and Tasman.
YTD March 2021, the non-residential building types with the highest values were Education (+46%); Storage (+26%); and Offices, Administration& Public Transport (+9.1%).
Stats NZ’s April 2021 building consent data is scheduled for release on 1 June, while the March 2021 quarter Value of Building Work put in Place will be released soon after on 4 June.
