                                                   Towards a greener and
cleaner build
Soudal has just launched the “world’s first isocyanate-free, environmentally friendly MS expanding foam” into the New Zealand market.
Gorilla MS “green” Expanding Foam delivers the all- important environmental tick without compromising on capabilities such as thermal and acoustic insulation, adhesive strength and stability.
All of this is delivered with the Soudal-patented SMART applicator, giving builders the benefit of highly accurate, gun- free application and reuse for up to six weeks.
Also new from Soudal is Gorilla Expanding Foam Remover. It’s designed to solve the tradie’s nightmare – removing cured expanding foam from places it shouldn’t’ be without resorting to mechanical removal and a high risk of significant surface damage to the substrate.
Gorilla Expanding Foam Remover is the first product on
the New Zealand market to offer a simpler, cleaner, low-stress solution for many non-porous surfaces – just brush, scrape, and wipe!

estate, far more than most countries.
“We’re probably way too wedded to our homes making
money... But it is good for us and our industry.”
Having said this, Darren believes that in the current situation the industry needs to “look hard at our entire supply chain. We’ve done a lot of work around lead times etc [but] the problem with all of those components, of course, is the old adage that you can only control what you can control.”
And the things that are outside of anyone’s control are “hitting hard”. This is the new normal “for the foreseeable future”, he believes.
“We have to deal with those situations and try and account for them, build stock accordingly, work closely with our retail partners and with our customers and try and keep as forward planned as possible.
“The other complication, of course, is that the demand is still higher than it’s been for quite some time, so that tends to put extra pressure on your forecasts, your stock and to meet the demand.
“And you only need one piece of the puzzle, whether it’s a raw material that’s in short supply or a ship that isn’t available, and that can throw everything out.”
In terms of New Zealand staying relatively Covid-free, Bostik’s Paul O’Reilly sums up thus: “This has been one of the few occasions where it’s actually really nice to be thousands of miles away from the rest of the world.
“They always say that the bad thing about New Zealand is that we’re at the end of the world.
“But the good thing about New Zealand right now is that we are at the end of the world!”
Trouble is, being a tiny market at the end of the world, with material lead times of 90 days or more, our supply chain woes are not going to come right in the short term.
I’ve been hearing about 6-7-week delays in deliveries of some materials and suppliers have already been talking about invoking force majeure.
More than one will be worried about their DIFOTs with another admitting: “We’re definitely going to have holes over the next 8-10 months that we’re going to have to manage.”
Hopefully, the channel will share the task at hand and work on this together.
