48,707 new dwellings were consented, +22.1% on YTD Jan 2021, led by Canterbury (+34%), Waikato (+26%), Otago (+21%), Auckland (+19%
with 20,000+ homes consented in a month for the second time ever), and Wellington (+16%).
YTD January 2022, the number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents was 9.5 (compared with 7.8 in the Jan 2021 year), still nowhere near the all-time high of 13.4/1,000 set in the year to December 1973.
YTD January 2022, growth in the value of non-residential building consents was driven by education buildings (+8.1%) and factories (+53%).
Stats NZ’s February 2022 building consent data is scheduled for release on 30 March, and the December quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place was due on 8 March, after our magazine deadline. So look to www. hardwarejournal.co.nz for the most timely updates.
