nearly everyone seems to be pouring into their homes, although Tim Joyce at LSC is more measured about digital: “We are seeing a little bit of a transition from mechanical type hardware and certainly electronic door locks are becoming more and more prevalent.
“So we’re also now going into home security through the likes of cameras and through the likes of alarms and alarms that have cameras in-built as well.”
Tim says it is “just a natural progression, bringing a lot of what has been in the commercial sector for a little while into home and residential use, being able to bring it down to a cost level that’s more acceptable and to a smaller scale for them as well.”
THE EFFECTS OF MEDIUM DENSITY
With higher density housing, ongoing building management is another key consideration for access control, whether that be on a traditional mechanical system with a master key system or moving forward the kind of access control systems that provide the right level of access for someone to successfully maintain a building.

Bryce Carter and Allegion for example have been seeing good growth in entrance and access systems from medium density housing developments.
“In medium density construction we’ve seen a strong level of engagement around smart enabled products and locking solutions,” says Bryce.
“That supports the home sharing and online purchasing trends that we’ve been seeing with residential dwellings. “There are also access control requirements, fire door
compliance, and disability requirements, depending on the building’s height, which will see some product sets change.
“Where I think we’ve seen the biggest shift is around access control by way of smart-enabled products. I think this draws from the way that we’re seeing people live their lives, whether that be on a site that potentially doesn’t have storage or is a shared space.
“And with all the online purchasing of products, there’s a need to be able to allow someone access but also have the peace of mind when they’re gone.
“It’s a combination of both building requirements that relate to accessibility, code compliance, and fire door compliance. And then from an access control point of view,
the maintenance and functionality of the home.
“Having the ability to do that remotely is something that’s
of real value in this space.”
AN END TO SMART HOME PHOBIA?
Techno-fear at the very thought of smarter homes is becoming less of a barrier: “We’re finding certainly with
the advent of technology that the homeowner is becoming more astute with a lot of this stuff and is able to handle these things.”
