TWO YEARS INTO Project Earth, its transformational sustainability strategy, high end 113-year-old UK department store Selfridges continues to reinvent itself.
Take its recently launched first annual Project Earth Report, setting out new and ambitious targets to “reinvent retail and meet its commitment to a net zero future.”
Using three “Ms” to explain its plan – Materials, Models, and Mindsets – the high class store has set out some seriously bold targets which it aims to hit by 2030, or sooner.
With “Materials”, Selfridges pledges to broaden its commitment to only stock products that meet strict environmental and ethical standards.
In terms of “Models”, the store is aiming for a many as 45% of all transactions across its four stores and online to come from circular products and services, with an initiative called “Reselfridges” that now houses all-circular models, forming the backbone of Selfridges’ future business.
Selfridges has already increased sales of pre-loved items through Reselfridges by 240%, facilitated over 28,000 repairs, rented more than 2,000 items and sold more than 8,000 refills.
“Mindsets” is a commitment to “building an inclusive retail culture
in which teams, communities and customers put people and planet first in all decision making.”

Bunnings in Australia announced in September that it would be accepting in-store transactions through buy now, pay later service Afterpay in time for spring.
Afterpay customers will be able to shop from any of the 300+ Bunnings stores across the Lucky Country, in-store only, with no minimum spend, allowing customers to split the cost of their projects, home upgrades, tools and more, across four, interest-free fortnightly instalments.
Katrina Konstas, EVP, Country Manager at Afterpay, says of the deal: “We know over a third (34%) of Aussies have found comfort in DIY, and with Afterpay now available at Bunnings we hope this will allow even more Australians to enjoy their hobbies and home projects.”
To checkout with Afterpay in-store, customers will need to install the Afterpay App, and add the Afterpay Card to their digital wallet.
Bunnings competitors Mitre 10 in Australia and Home Timber & Hardware are also Afterpay partners.
