FASTER SIMPLER STRONGER
Looking forward to a new year
OVER THE LAST 13-odd years since my September 2009 debut as Editor of NZ Hardware Journal, the industry has changed a lot.
Different types of people have come into the hardware channel, and their new work and training backgrounds have brought new skills and tools to the industry.
I’d like to think NZ Hardware Journal played a part in communicating these changes.
But, back in 2009, with a background in publishing, mainly design and architecture, what did I know?
So I vowed to talk to as many industry players as I could, if not face to face, then at least by phone.
Some expressed surprise that I was interested in what they were doing and what they had to say about their industry.
Some were delighted to have an ear to bend.
And some declined to pick up the phone, as some still do, which is a shame because I’ve tried to be as inclusive as possible over the years.
I have never seen NZ Hardware Journal as a news medium, nor has it been about airing the industry’s dirty washing, we’ve just been trying to facilitate the sharing of
information and values.
And it’s never been about “me”, it’s
not been about creating a platform for myself – which I know is an increasingly unfashionable stance in today’s media – it’s been about you.
Anyway, what’s with all the gushy restrospective?
This is my last issue of NZ Hardware Journal.
I am making a clean break from work for a time and will consider what else I might get up to in 2023.
I’d like to thank all the members of the NZ Hardware Journal team, past and current, for their help and support over the years.
And I’d like to thank everyone in the industry who’s shared their information, thoughts, views, and comments in these pages. I’ve enjoyed the dialogue.
But enough about me.
Not a lot of people know this, but 2022 is NZ Hardware Journal’s 40th year as
a standalone publication, thanks to the foresight and efforts of the late Bud Little and others.
40 years old... Mid-life crisis anyone?
Been there, done that – now it’s time to move on.
Where to from here?
Well, the 2023 Hardware Awards will be with you before you know it – on 16 February in fact – and I fully expect them to continue to serve the industry as an affirmative, people-orientated event.
All the very best to our readers, contributors and commercial partners – I hope you all have a happy and well- deserved holiday!
