“New homes consented in Auckland and New Zealand are at levels last seen in the mid-1970s”
consented nationally (+10% on the March 2018 year), driven by the 13,874 new homes consented in Auckland (+24% on the March 2018 year).
“New homes consented in Auckland and New Zealand are at levels last seen in the mid-1970s, although the population has risen significantly over the same period,” qualifies Stats NZ’s Construction Statistics Manager, Melissa McKenzie.
Results were mixed in other regions, with Nelson and Manawatu-Wanganui both seeing large retirement village developments in the year and the West Coast also seeing good growth.
Marlborough (reflecting a decrease in consents for standalone houses), Bay of Plenty and Gisborne all saw declines, YTD.
In terms of actual building work, the stats for the value of building work put in place for the March 2019 quarter were due for release on 7 June, after we go to press.
However we’ll bring you an update online first and follow up in the July issue of NZ Hardware Journal, along with the consent numbers for April 2019 which were to be released on 30 May.
