The visual and functional enhancement of all doors and windows, not just showpieces, is more popular than ever. Andy Kerr reports.
THE DOOR AND door & window hardware business is booming, post-lockdown, leaving some suppliers struggling to address the frenetic post-COVID catch-up.
Hume Doors & Timber sells raw, paint-grade MDF doors and GM, James Cummins, says the company is extremely busy, “overtiming two to three days a week, and it’s not because of lack o f s t a ”.
“All the joiners and pre-hangers that we sell to are busy with July looking very good but I can’t help you after that,” he says. “Demand is due to renovations and new-builds that were started pre-Covid and we’re all just catching up to them at the moment.”
Looking further out, James admits that although he’s “a bit nervous about August onwards”, Hume is still looking to appoint a Sales Manager within a couple of months.
Brett Wallace, GM at Cowdroy NZ, nds that while some customers have a lot of work going forward, others are looking at a bit of a gap in the pipeline.
Admitting to being “inundated with work”, Cowdroy is not alone in feeling behind the eight-ball, thanks to high trade demand.
With its unique “doors and hardware service” model, Home Group is also at-out. In fact, MD, Andy Hunt, says the company experienced a four-fold increase in business in June and is expecting to double typical July sales.
And the market outlook? “At the moment, we’re pretty positive,” observes David Eeles , Sales & Marketing Manager at Miles Nelson.
“I thought May sales were going to be bad, as half the month
