statement by using a pull handle option in stainless steel, satin graphite, or copper. e other trend is automation: electronics are being used to solve access control issues where in the past a simple mechanical solution would have been used.”
With more eyes on aesthetics, recognising that new architecturally designed homes don’t always suit a big bulky rose behind the door handle, Sean Crowley says KnK has developed an Architectural Range with four modern stainless steel handles and a Minimo 3mm-thick sprung rose that suits the individual handles, and has the nish to match.
“ e rose sits neatly against the door creating the feeling of luxury, and is paired with a smooth, soft-close latch and ergonomic design to give the best technical and aesthetical result possible. It comes in a stainless steel or black nish.”
David Eeles agrees that, especially in the higher end of the market, there has always been a trend towards aesthetics.
“Mechanical efficiency is still paramount but there is a trend to towards new finishes and hardware concealment, leading to streamlining or minimising the impact of the hardware on the door. Also in this high end we have a noticed a slight trend back towards traditional timber joinery and to this end we have designed a proprietary range of new window fittings.”
DOORS – A SHOWPIECE FOR SOME
In terms of style, Hume Doors & Timber o ers some 60 di erent designs but most popular is “anything with lines”, both internal and external.
“Some bespoke, high-end designs are commissioned by customers who want to carry a theme throughout the house,” says James Cummins, adding “But there’s less of that and more of the continued demand for lines straight up and down! Stand- outs are four vertical lines and seven lines and it’s been pretty much the same for the past 18 years.”
In response to building industry feedback that the supply
and installation of pre-hung doors and hardware is often problematic, Andy Hunt explains that Home Group went back to the drawing board when designing its new Duo Door system.
is allows a door to be easily hung left- or right-handed, although Home Group also o ers an install service that covers most of the country, and is quick to add that the company purchases 99% of its products from other Kiwi-owned businesses.
“By working with this new system, not only can we supply nationwide through local merchants, but we can do it quickly, with 90% of our doors being ready for delivery.
“All our doors and jambs are pre-primed to preserve the door warranty, and when ordered with hardware, they are supplied 90% pre-cropped. No site measures are required and the door can be assembled, hung and have hardware installed in under 15 minutes per door.”
ese e ciencies, suggests Andy Hunt, can translate into installation savings of up to $100 per door.
E ciency and ease of installation are also on David Eeles’ mind: “As we [suppliers] look to speed up the installation
