Value of building work put in place – Sept 2021 quarter
and Waikato (+9.7%); and rest of the South Island (+6.0%).
Auckland, the region most affected by lockdowns, was –8.7% by value.
By volume, overall building activity in New Zealand was –8.6% on the June 2021 quarter.
Residential building activity volume was –6.4%, and non-residential building activity –12%.
OCTOBER BUILDING CONSENTS
Consents by value for the October month from Stats NZ continued to set new highs, as follows:
• Residential:$1.75billion(+13.9%on
Oct 2020).
• Non-residential:$814million
(+56.9%).
• Total:$2.6billion(+23.7%).
By volume, 4,043 new dwellings were consented in the month (+10.5% on Oct 2020), of which 52% were standalone houses, 35% townhouses, flats & units, 8% apartments and 5% retirement village units.
Year to date October 2021, consent values were as follows:
• Residential:$20.3billion(+27.3%on
YTD Oct 2020).
• Non-residential:$8.0billion(+16.5%).
• Total:$28.3billion(+24.0%).
In the year ended October 2021, 47,715 new dwellings were consented, +25.6% on YTD September 2020, led by Rest of North Island (+33%), Canterbury (+31%), Auckland (+27%), Waikato (+23%), Wellington (+14%), and Rest of South Island (+12%).
In the year ended October 2021, the number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents was 9.3, compared with 7.5 in the October 2020 year.
YTD October 2021, growth in the value of non-residential building consents was driven by education buildings (+45%) and factories (+56%) while storage buildings fell (–2.2%).
Stats NZ’s November 2021 building consent data is released on 13 January, with the December quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place scheduled for release on 4 February.
