Value of building work put in place – Dec 2021 quarter
“The December quarter reflected a return to work with the total actual value of building work put in place +17% on 2020”
By value, the February 2022 numbers were as follows:
• Residential:$1.9billion(+30.7%on
Feb 2021).
• Non-residential:$716million
(+19.5%).
• Total:$2.6billion(+27.6%).
By volume, after January’s negative growth, 4,195 new dwellings were consented in the February 2022 month (+34% on Feb 2021), of which 46% were standalone houses, 44% townhouses, flats & units, 5% apartments and 4% retirement village units.
For the year to date February 2022, consent values were as follows:

Non-residential: $8.3 billion (+15.7%). Total:$29.9billion(+25.7%).
In the year ended February 2022,

49,733 new dwellings were consented, +25.3% on YTD Feb 2021, led by Northland (+46% albeit small numbers), Canterbury (+42%), Otago (+27%), Wellington (+24%), and Auckland (+22%).
YTD February 2022, the national number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents was 9.7, compared with 7.8 in the Feb 2021 year.
The record number of new homes consented per 1,000 residents was 13.4 in the year ended December 1973.
YTD February 2022, growth in the consent value of non-residential buildings was again driven by factories (+47%) and education buildings (+11%).
Stats NZ’s March 2022 building consent data is scheduled for release on 3 May while the March 2022 quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place is due on 3 June, so look to www.hardwarejournal.co.nz for the most timely updates.
