UK RETAILERS AND THE OFFENSIVE WEAPONS ACT
THE UK GOVERNMENT is fast
tracking a new piece of legislation that will soon affect retailers that carry bladed items.
The proposed Offensive Weapons Actcomesinresponsetoarangeoflife- threateningactsinrecenttimesand affects the sale of all bladed items in the housewares, DIY, and garden sectors.
Whilst most legislation is typically introduced in October or April, it is anticipated that guidelines for the Act may be confirmed as early as before Christmas for commencement ahead of April 2022, leaving many retailers simply unprepared for the changes required.
Indeed, UK suppliers and retailers of the following items will need to quickly adapt their packaging, presentation and, where remote sales are involved, age verification and delivery systems too:

professional trade tools (regardless of whether they are marketed as knives). In all cases, appropriate systems are
required for both retail and online sales. As you can imagine the UK home
improvement and retailer organisations are up in arms about the implications for their members.
