AFTER AN UNCERTAIN few months, it was a relief and a pleasure to welcome our 400+ guests to the Hardware Awards on the evening of Tuesday 10 May.
If you weren’t there, you missed a prime opportunity to network with your peers, socialise and generally celebrate being out and about.
If you weren’t there, and haven’t checked in on our Facebook page, where we posted the winners and a few snapshots during the night, for all the results and photos go to www. hardwarejournal.co.nz/awards/ awards-2021/
The June magazine and Digital Edition will go into a lot more depth but, with this May magazine going to print just hours after the event itself, we decided time was too short to do justice to the program and our winners.
So, look to the June magazine for full coverage of the Awards, including profiles of the winners, all the best photos and more.
The Awards were also a chance to recognise two people who were important to us and to the hardware industry but are no longer with us.
One was Bud Little, founder of NZ Hardware Journal and of the Hardware
Awards, who passed in 2020 but whose name is now engraved for posterity on the Young Achiever Award.
This Award was presented on the night to Luke Hughes of Mitre 10 MEGA Wanaka by Bud’s granddaughter Charli.
We also marked the recent passing of Clifford Buchler with a standing ovation to honour this much loved and sorely missed member of the hardware and broader retail and business communities.
As 2020’s Retailer of the Year, we will be donating Clifford’s travel prize to a charity of his family’s choice.
Other important people to us and
to the Hardware Awards were the knowledgeable and experienced members of this year’s judging panel, for whose help, experience and impartial insights I say thank you: Prof Jonathan Elms (Sir Stephen Tindall Chair Professor in Retail Management at Massey University); Danielle McFadyen (Agency Manager of Retailworld Auckland & Director of Hospoworld Auckland); Trish Mclean (CEO of RWR Group recruitment); Juanita Neville-Te Rito (MD & founder of RetailX); Brett O’Neill (Global Group Sales Director of Innova Products);
Craig Robertson (now GM at Appliance Connexion, the national support office for 1OO% Appliances); Craig Wilson (Director of Peter Robinson Paving & Concrete and former Mitre 10 NZ CEO); and Jeremy Wilson (Director of Build People).
We will be talking with stakeholders about the next Hardware Awards soon but for now cheers, and good health to all our readers.
