                                                       IKEA goes inner city
IKEA HAS ACQUIRED a West London shopping centre to house its first UK small format city centre store which will open its doors in spring 2021.
The store will be the first time that IKEA’s home furnishing accessories will be available to buy on the UK high street and is not the same format offering as the small scale Planning Studios already rolled out.
This, the first of the new small inner city UK stores, will be housed in Kings Mall in Hammersmith, West London, which was apparently acquired for £170 million for the purpose.
Ingka Group plans to “bring IKEA
to city centres around the world” using this new store format which will feature 2,000+ home furnishing accessories available to take away on the same day as well as IKEA’s entire product range which will be available to buy from the store for home delivery.
Interesting to note here by the way
that, reading
between the lines,
Kings Mall may
not be the first
such acquisition
by Ingka Centres,
which says it
“aims to transform
traditional
shopping
centres into
convenient city
meeting places to reinvigorate the high street based on community needs and aspirations.
“Ingka Centres will work with the local community in Hammersmith to regenerate Kings Street ... bringing new life and an approximately £170 million investment to the area for customers, co-workers and the wider community. “
Gerard Groener, Managing Director of Ingka Centres says: “Our urban projects are all about getting closer to
more people. More of our customers are living in cities than ever before, and a regenerated Kings Mall will be an ideal location for reaching millions of Londoners.”
In addition to the new format in Hammersmith, IKEA has two Planning Studios on Tottenham Court Road and in Bromley, as well as five existing London stores in Wembley, Tottenham, Croydon, Lakeside and Greenwich.
