Value of building work put in place (by quarter)
“The December quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place seems to underline the doubts being raised
in our risk data for non- residential construction”

January 2021’s data show the value of
residential building consents as +16.6% on Jan 2020, set against a 3.4% fall in commercial construction consents and +11.8% overall.
In terms of volume, in YTD Jan 2021, 39,881 new homes were consented (+5.8% on YTD Jan 2020), marginally less than New Zealand’s all-time high for a 12-month period (40,025 in the year ended February 1974).
Skipping to the latest data, for the February 2021 month, the change in actual values flip flopped on January, as follows:
• Residential: $1.4 billion (+3.2% on Feb 2020).
• Non-residential: $599 million (+24.5%).
• Total: $2.1 billion (+10.7%).
By volume, 3,129 new dwellings were
consented in the month (–4.7% on Feb 2020).
YTD Feb 2021, consent values were as follows:
• Residential: $16.7 billion (+4.7% on
YTD Dec 2019).
• Non-residential: $7.1 billion
(–2.7%).
• Total: $23.8 billion (+2.4%).
By volume, 39,725 dwellings were consented in YTD February 2021 (+4.7% on 2020).
Stats NZ’s March 2021 building consent data is scheduled for release on 6 May, while the March 2021 quarter’s Value
of Building Work put in Place will be released on 4 June.
