Looking at the calendar year, 2019 by value was also well up on the previous period:
• Residential: $15.9 billion (+12% on
calendar year 2018).
• Non-residential: $7.5 billion (+5.2%). • Total: $23.3 billion (+9.7%).
Non-residential value growth was led by offices, administration & public transport buildings (+17% on calendar year 2018).
By volume, residential consents for the year totalled 37,538 dwellings, +13.8% on calendar year 2018 and the highest annual number since 1974 when 40,025 homes were consented in the February 1974 year.
For the year, Auckland and the Waikato (+18% and +14% respectively) were joined in seeing double-digit volume growth
by Wellington (+16%), with Canterbury (+11%) and Rest of the South Island (+14%).
Thanks in the main to the ongoing growth of multi-unit consents (more than half of all dwelling consents for the year), Auckland did better than 15,000 dwellings consented for the year for the first time, easily surpassing the previous peak of 13,000 homes consented in the 1970s.
Consent numbers for January 2020
were due on 4 March, while the Value
