SECPID’s first priority is security and safety for Shenandoah Estates residents, and the extra-duty Security Patrols by EBR Sheriff’s Deputies are a very effective part of that goal. However, every resident can do their part to protect their own and others’ safety and security. SECPID asked Captain Buquoi to tell us, based on his years of service in law enforcement and coordinating the patrols in Shenandoah, “What should we be doing?” We appreciate his response, and everything that the EBRSO does with and for all of us, all the time!
NOT PAYING ATTENTION
Not Paying Attention, a phrase that is used many times in our lives. A major reason for this would be the numerous areas in which this phrase would apply. However, is this phrase used as an excuse, a justification or a reason for not taking responsibility for an action?
Let’s break down some of the common situations we face each day where “not paying attention” could result in a costly issue.
DRIVING
“Not paying attention” is one of the most common excuses for a traffic violation. When attention is directed to passengers or cell phones, drivers fail to notice speed limit and stop signs. Shenandoah has a lot of bikers, walkers and joggers, (of all ages) and a non-at- tentive driver is a real issue to their safety. Disregard the distractions and concentrate on the task at hand, driving responsibly.
HOME SECURITY
Ninety-nine percent of all vehicle burglaries are the result of unlocked vehicle doors. Make the effort to check that vehicle doors are locked when you exit the vehicle. Remove valuables, (purses, GPS units, phones), from plain sight. If you carry a firearm in your vehicle, secure it in your home at night.
Property thefts are a crime of opportunity. Look at your residence from the street; is there anything of value left under your carport, such as lawn equipment, generators, bikes, that can be seen by someone passing by?
Pay attention to people or vehicles that are suspicious. Get to know the neighbors around you. Know what they drive, when they will be out of town, etc. If something is observed, call the sheriff’s office. The strength of good neighbors cannot be emphasized for home security.
BENEFITS
The Shenandoah Estates Crime Prevention and Improvements District, (SECPID) of which you are a member, has taken a progres- sively aggressive approach to ensuring the safety of all of the residents of Shenandoah. Benefits from SECPID makes Shenandoah a strong neighborhood, however, the strength is amplified when all actively participate in their own way. Be assured, paying attention to the small everyday issues we all face will contribute to making Shenandoah Strong.
