The story Timmy Timeout is about using a very old “punishment” in a new and be er way.
When a child is misbehaving it usually is because they are having some s nky thinking... just as when we adults misbehave. The idea of me out, is to get the child out of the situa on and get them to calm down. This is seen as punishment by most children.
And who usually decides when the child can get out of time out? Usually it is an adult and the child feels powerless. But more importantly, what has the time out situation taught the child? It may not be what you would have intended. “Next time I will wait until mom is out of the house and then I will hit my brother.”
This story is about children learning to recognize their inappropriate behavior, hopefully be able to iden fy their s nky thinking that proceeded it and come up with a be er way to deal with a similar situa on in the future. If they succeed with this process, they will be able to get themselves out of me out.
We may be frustrated with the inappropriate behavior of our children and we may act impulsively. But remember this story and how you can use me out to help your children develop skills to use forever.
