This is a common consequence of these irrational beliefs. In order not to have to deal with the anxiety caused by these beliefs, you minimize or reject the positive potential of a job, date, education and so on, thereby going against your more rational beliefs.
This combination of irrational beliefs of the Young Man in the story leads him to reject the guidance of the Old Man and ultimately to throw away the Old Man’s most prized possession.
The Old Man’s most prized possession was not the block of lead but the willing to take what life has given and do the best you can with it.
