PARENT NOTES
GOLD TO LEAD
TOPIC: This story is about a willingness to accept guidance and not letting your past mistakes and failures determine your future life.
It also illustrates that we should be doing what is in your long term best self-interest without being overly concerned with the opinions of others.
Often, you can hear the frustrated adult say to their child, “If you would just try” or “You can do it if you practice.” We think of this as a normal interaction between the parent and child and it is because of the limited and frequently irrational belief system of children. We hope that our children will learn that they must accept life as it is in reality and not hope that by some magical intercession they will be successful. They must realize that setting goals, evaluating alternatives and working hard are all part of the “maturation” process that adults are suppose to guide them through.
Unfortunately, many of us never make the transition of a child “Wishing upon a star” and we become an adult go from one job or relationship to another hoping for some “magical intercession” that will make everything all right.
Most children seem to have a natural tendency to want to avoid frustration and anxiety. This can mean avoiding difficult tasks, over indulgence in distracting behaviors such as watching television and engaging in “self soothing” behavior such as overeating. As adults, we may engage in these same types of behaviors because of the same types of irrational beliefs as are exhibited by the children.
