EXERCISE
The Exercise portion of this story is very straightforward. It is a behavioral exercise to teach children how to divide a task into manageable parts and to take them on, one
at a time. It is easy for any of us to overwhelm ourselves with just a few well chosen irrational beliefs, “I’ll never finish this,” “I will never figure this out,” “This will take too long.” With this type of self-talk going on in your head, your motivation evaporates and your energy level drops and you... quit.
This simple exercise and your encouragement can go a long way to help your children develop more rational self-talk when confronted with a difficulty, “I just have to keep trying,” “That was better than the last time I tried this,” “I almost got it right this time.” Life difficulties are less about tasks as they are about the habitual conversations we have with ourselves about the tasks.
