Jerry Courtney was killed by a train near Watson Station on July 6, 1915. Jeffersonville Evening News dated July 7, 1915, article stated that he was “killed by a train and that he jumped too late.” Witness, Miss Annie Hines (the woman who took Uncle Ed out of orphanage) witnessed the accident and said that Mr. Courtney was walking on the tracks toward the station. She yelled at him and the train blew its whistle, but he did not get off the tracks soon enough and was run over by the train.
The Jeffersonville Democrat dated March 31, 1916, stated that Lora was seeking $10,000 in damages from the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway Company. A court hearing was to be held October 9, 1916. I have not been able to locate information on the court hearing to see if Lora was awarded damages, but I will continue to try to locate that information.
