“I could not help it,” replied the “Sad Squirrel.” “Those two (the “Whispering Squirrels”) were laughing at me and I felt stupid and foolish. I did not want to have anything to do with anyone else.” “Yes, we all saw you up in the tall tree by yourself,” said the leader.
Then she called the third squirrel to come in front of the group. The leader asked the “Happy Squirrel” what had happened to her that day. She replied, “Well, I was having a very nice day when I happened upon these two (The Whispering Squirrels), talking quietly. As I got close to them, they stop talking and laughed and started whispering again.
At first I was a little angry and embarrassed. Then I asked myself, ‘Do I really know what they are saying?’ And of course I did not really know. I might have been just making things up in my head. They may not have been talking about me. They may have been talking about me but saying nice things.
But then I told myself, ‘Even if they are talking about me and even if it is mean or ugly, why should I care? Is there any good reason to let those two cause me to upset myself and make myself angry or sad.’ And since there is no good reason to let them control how I feel or behave, I didn’t and I continued to have a very nice day.”
