P. 11
Then, over 150 years ago, whaling ships started stopping at their island to get fresh water. Since these birds did not have a rule about not speaking with or going with strangers, they walked right up to the humans. And you know how humans are not always very nice. I guess the sailors were tired of eating fish and wanted some chicken pot pie. Anyway, within a few years, all of these rule-less birds were gone. At the time, they were called Dodos. And now, to all other animals, that name means, “He who disobeys rules.”
This last example is one that some say is true and others say is made up. Regardless, it is a good example and one that needs telling. Once again, both humans and animals have the same rule, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” Most animals are very careful to say nice things to each other and not make fun of others. But as the story goes, there was one group which constantly disobeyed this rule. They were a type of horse known as the Unicorns. According to animal legend, Unicorns were always being ugly to each other, gossiping about one another and they never had anything good to say about anyone else.
They were all made to move to an uninhabited island so that they could not be mean to others. However, their meanness was so bad that the island destroyed itself and all the Unicorns with it. I hope that you have found these examples of rules, both human and animal interesting. It is important that you remember that learning and obeying rules is as important for you as it is for us animals. You can do this if you remember that Rules are your Friends.
