Page 6 - SB-Rules are your Friends
P. 6

I bet that you did not know that we animals have some of the same rules as you humans. Sometimes the reasons for these rules are the same for us as they are for you. But sometimes the reasons for our rules are a little different. Here is a rule that we both have but our reasons for the rule are different. The rule is, “Always take turns.”
I am sure that you are familiar with that rule. In your world, it has to do with being fair and nice. In the world of birds, it is also a very important rule but for a different reason. You see, there are many types of birds who fly south in the winter to find food. You may have noticed them in the sky, flying in that familiar “V” pattern. Some of you may have wondered why they fly in a “V” and not a “T” or some other letter. Well, the reason is very important and it is why birds have the rule about taking turns.
These birds have to fly very great distances. The reason they fly in a “V” is that it is less tiring. The first bird is breaking up the wind, making it easier for the others to fly. Because he or she is first, the air goes around them and the others are able to fly with less effort. But as you might expect, this means that the first bird must work harder than the others. As a consequence of pushing this air out of the way for the others, the first bird gets very tired.
That is why birds have the rule about taking turns. Once the lead bird gets a little tired, another bird will take his turn and become the lead bird.
