They said that they were able to understand things that before the Glasses were confusing. They remarked that no longer did the merchants or anyone else take advantage of them. All in all, they had the highest praise for the King’s Glasses.
Of course, the King found this all the more baffling. “So many had the opportunity to have the Glasses but returned them. However, those who kept them, praise them.” The King shook his is head in confusion. Finally, the flow of people returning the glasses became a trickle and then stopped altogether. At that point, the King summoned the Peddler once again.
I can understand why the King is disappointed. Here he is trying to help them obtain wisdom and they don’t want it.
So the King and the Peddler met again in the King’s throne room. “We have all of the returned glasses in the store room,” the King began. “My accountant estimates that all but maybe 5-8% of the glasses were returned.” “Yes,” replied the Peddler, “That is about average.” “What do you mean average!” shouted the King.
“There are many kingdoms like yours,” replied the Peddler.
“On the average, they only keep 5% of the glasses, some a little more, some a little less.” “Then you knew this would happen?” demanded the King. “No, not really,” replied the Peddler, “It could have happened that everyone would want the glasses but it has never happened before.”
