We soon found ourselves driving a back road and Bob said he thought we were lost. I said, “Bob, I really don’t give a shit. There is not going to be anybody shooting at us or throwing any shit at us, so what difference does it make if we are lost?” Right at that moment a water buffalo came running across the road and into the jungle and I don’t really know why, but I started chasing that creature into the jungle with the station wagon. I was driving and trying to follow him and somehow we came out just north of the town of Agana, Guam. I turned to Bob and pointed towards town and said, “We’re going that way.”
By now we were feeling wasted and to get where we were supposed to be staying, we had to pull off the main road onto big gravel shoulder and turn left to go into the motel area and left again down a quick hill. I was going about 60 mph and when I turned, the car slid through the motel parking lot. As this was happening, Bob said the motel is right there, so I powered the son-of-a-bitch and Bob was worried I wouldn’t be able to stop.
I told him, “I’ll stop this mother,” and threw it into park which sent the vehicle sideways, but amazingly it came to a stop right in front of our room. I remember a Japanese woman watching from in front of her room in disbelief and once we came to a stop she went back in and slammed the door. To this day that was probably the worst hangover I have ever had in my life and I won’t drink champagne anymore. Despite not being able to leave the next day, I was thankful to be out of Vietnam.
