Dan and I were in my motor home on our way back to Las Vegas and I was tired, so Dan volunteered to drive. When I woke from a nap, we were at a hospital. I asked Dan if he was OK and his reply was, ‘I’ve had all these surgeries on my leg and I need pain pills.” I asked him if he got any and he replied, “No.” Later he stopped again and I was getting up from my nap, we were at a hospital again. When Dan came out of the hospital, I pretended to be asleep and watched him put something in a cubby hole. A short time later, pulling into Salt Lake City, we got a call from Los Angeles saying Dan needed to get back ASAP. We went to the airport and put Dan on a plane back to L.A. I got back on the interstate and stopped at the first rest area I found. I couldn’t wait to see what he had stashed in the small compartment. What a shock it was to find three plastic bottles of oxycodone full to the top and with a label for Dan Haggerty, “take as needed for pain.”
A few years back, Dan had a history of drug abuse. The questions that came up were, is he just getting high or does that awful surgery require those pills and how in the hell do you get people to give you narcotics without a prescription? I guess you can do anything you want when you are famous enough.
I tried to overlook all of that. One day I got a call from a movie producer, Barry Perlman wanting to know if it was true that Dan had straightened up since he had been working with me. My response was that he takes pain pills for his leg, but I wasn’t aware
