and making stories out of them. Any kind of warning or billboard, he would go through the whole deal. In a sense, he was already performing the part he later acted on The Monkees. I never knew he could play drums. But then I found out later that he never played the drums on those Monkees sessions, so there you go.
An incident that really highlights our troubles with Mickey happened when he got us run out of Grants, New Mexico on our way to Missouri. For some reason, Mickey decided he wanted to bring an extra amplifier and that meant somebody ended up riding in the back seat with it. By the time we reached Grants, the backseat rider had about all he could stand of that amp. The Craig brothers were driving a car with a luggage rack, so we went to buy something to cover the amp and some rope to tie it down. We found a Western Auto store where we purchased some quarter-inch rope and a knife. Mickey proceeded to tell the cashier that we were going to use that rope to tie him up because he had been kidnapped. I guess he didn’t get much of a reaction from the guy. The rest of us had already walked out of the store, and I was thinking Mickey was still talking to this guy because he didn’t want to help. We were covering up the amp and tying it down when Bob said, “Aww, Jesus — don’t look. There are cops everywhere.”
  I walked around the car and looked down the street. Sure enough, here came four cops with shotguns and I was wondering what the hell was going on. Turning around I saw more police coming from the other direction. They held us at gunpoint for twenty or thirty minutes searching around and then had us line up for identification checks. When they finally told me what was going
