CHAPTER 5 Moving Up The Ladder
PJ’s was a club on Santa Monica Boulevard, also owned by the owners of the Whisky and my favorite place to work. In the front of the big club was a jazz piano featuring one of the greats of the time, pianist Eddie Cano. In the back room, two groups alternated performances through the night. Trini Lopez was the main act before us and younger stars made up the clientele. One night I introduced dancer Joy Ciro to her future husband, Righteous Brother Bobby Hatfield of “Lost That Lovin Feelin” fame. Another night my heart skipped a beat when I saw Annette Funicello seated ringside. The only time I had been that close to her before it was when I sat in front of the television. Bobby Darin and wife Sandra Dee came in occasionally and one night Bobby played piano with us. Bob and I talked with Sam Cooke at closing time one night, only to get up the next morning to learn he had been murdered. It was hard to believe
