and headed on to Albuquerque. Stopping at a truck stop for gas, it shocked me to see people walking around my car, but it finally dawned on me that any direction I turned in Beverly Hills there were Cadillacs, Rolls Royces and Mercedes. After filling up the tank and answering a hundred questions and a girl yelling, “Hey, Poor Boy,” “I saw you on The Lloyd Thaxton Show,” I drove on up the mountain and was on my way to Texas.
I had just passed Clines Corners, New Mexico when a trooper pulled in behind me and on went his flashing lights. I pulled over and as he approached the car, I said I was only going sixty, what’s the problem? He replied that he wanted to see my papers because he didn’t think I could afford a car like this. I gave the wrong response when I said, “Just one time I would like to get through this state without getting stopped.” He told me to get my hands up and not say another word. He searched my car with no warrant and no probable cause. He had my things lying on the ground and then came back and said, “You can talk now. Tell me where the paperwork for the car is and I want it all.” I told him, no problem. I found the dealer folder under the seat and gave it to him. Since I had a case of cotton mouth, I picked up a bottle of mouthwash, only to see the officer draw his gun and point it at me. He then said, “We’re gonna be here a while and you need to ask me if you want to do anything,” and he told me to get in his car.
He said he had to radio Santa Fe and have someone call Sacramento and contact the dealer to verify my story. After about an hour, the radio came alive with the dispatcher saying a Mr. Gary Graham had purchased a Cadillac there and had paid cash and
