Page 13 - Whispering Squirrels
P. 13

Each squirrel saw others whispering (bad situation) so the “A” activating event was the same.
I hope that you are beginning to understand that your thinking
will determine how you will deal with situations. And of equal importance, is the idea that you can control your thinking. Your “normal” way of reacting to a situation may cause you problems. You may have to change your, “normal” way of thinking about a situation, so that you can deal with it better. This can be anything from cleaning your room to learning your math.
We all develop habits of thinking and feeling and behaving. If someone calls you a name, you may “automatically” get angry and your behavior may get you in trouble. If you have a test on Friday, you may “automatically” put off studying until the last minute and you will feel anxious and do poorly on the test.
By telling yourself things that make sense (Good Thinking) about a situation, you will have appropriate emotions and more effective behaviors. But by telling yourself your “automatic” beliefs about a situation, you may cause yourself problems.
