Page 28 - Whispering Squirrels
P. 28
Worksheet
Let’s look at the first page of the workbook portion of you our story. This page will talk about our ABCs. It is important for you to understand these ideas so that you can enjoy all the Coping
Skills stories.
“A” is an activating event or experience. In our story two squirrels are whispering just as another squirrel is working past them. In real life, this could be a test or someone calls you a name.
“B” is your belief system, which is what you tell yourself about “A.” Your thinking could be based on what is really going on and would be Good Thinking or it could be biased on things that are not true or don’t make sense and be Stinky Thinking.
“C” is the emotional and behavioral consequences of “B.” That is the way you feel and behave when confronted with an activating event “A.” If your thinking is Stinky, your emotions will be Not OK and your behavior will be Thumbs Down. If your thinking is Good then your emotions will be OK and your behavior will be
Thumbs Up.
It is important that your child learn to pay attention to the things they tell themselves (the “B”) about an event or person (the “A”) so they can understand and control their emotions and behaviors (the “C”).
This is a skill that can be learned but it does take time and effort the stories in the Coping Skills series, The Adventures of Cosmos Crow and designed to aid in this process.
