In the story, Cosmos talks about a couple of humorous situations that Dan got into because of his inattentiveness. Because he was not attentive when instructions were given, he got his head stuck in a jug.
By not paying attention to the rules of a game, Dan caused his team to lose the Scarecrow Tag game.
But not paying attention has more serious consequences.
For Dan, his not paying attention caused him to mishear instructions. In one situation, he misheard some instructions and got too close to a snake. It is not okay to visit with foxes, was the last instruction that Dan ever misheard.
As in many of the Adventures of Cosmos Crow stories, negative consequences happen to the characters because that is what frequently happens to us in reality. If you let your Stinky Thinking cause you to engage in Thumbs Down behaviors, eventually something very bad is going to happen.
Much of the frustration of children in school is not about their inability to learn or any true neurological problem but rather their inability to use the skill of paying attention in a consistent and sustained manner. Doing the wrong homework assignments, foolish mistakes in math problems and missing a key point brought out in class are all examples of problems that will cause a child to find school difficult and frustrating.
They are also usually the result of not paying attention.
