The last character, the Bull, uses physical intimidation to get what he wants. This type of manipulation becomes more sophisticated as we get older and becomes threats to our security (job), family (divorce) or friendships.
As adults, we are not threaten physically as often as are children (we will tend not to associate with someone who physically threatens us) but we still can experience threats of being ostracized by our peer work group or family. If we don’t go along with something because is not in our best self-interest (foolish, childish or hurtful), the use of this type of intimidation by others is fairly common. We use the physical threat in this story because of the age and lack of “sophistication” of our audience but the message is just as appropriate for adults.
Again, when the children identify what the Bull might say, the more intense the image and irrational the self messages the more negative the emotions. You will expect that fear is the primary emotion in this situation.
As with the other types of manipulation, the Young Girl did not change her garden and was even more debilitated by this emotional reaction than to the others. Fear, if not challenged becomes more intense and tends to generalize to similar situations (any type of change or any unfamiliar situation may becomes irrationally fear provoking). She is unable to even contemplate what to do after the confrontation with the Bull (fear) and in response, she just sits and stares at the garden.
