Worksheet
You want your child to come up with the type thinking Jeff would have; “I don’t have to do this,” “I’m too scared to do it,” “I should not have to do this,” “They are being mean to me,” and then help them identify the emotions that would accompany these thoughts... anger and possibly, fear.
The behavior that followed in this progress is that he refused to learn to climb trees. Guide them through “challenging” their (Jeff’s) irrational thinking. This challenging of irrational beliefs is an essential skill to modify inappropriate emotions and behaviors.
Let them come up with serious consequences of Jeff not learning to climb the trees. A minimizing of consequences is always a deterrent to changing behavior.
1. Why didn’t Jeff want to climb the banana trees?
Because he thought he could get plenty to eat without doing anything difficult.
2. What did he tell himself about the trees growing taller? That this “Tree growing is a mean trick”
3. When Jeff thought that way, how did he feel? Angry
4. What was his behavior when he felt that way?
He fussed and was mean to others
