Time passed and the trees grew taller and taller. The others tired of Jeff’s screaming and he was not nearly so loud now that they were high in the trees. Occasionally, the jumping from tree to tree by the other monkeys would knock down a few bananas. Jeff would scurry over and eat them. Some of the overripe bananas would also fall from the trees and Jeff would eat them too.
At night when the troop of monkeys would come down from the trees to sleep, Jeff would fuss and carry on about his difficulties. “You are all being mean to me! You have lots of food and you should be willing to share with me!”
He pointed to one of the younger monkeys and said, “You have eaten your fill and you still have some bananas while I have had only two old overripe ones all day. You should feel ashamed and guilty to see how miserable I am and you sitting there with your stomach bulging.” The other monkey began to feel ashamed and intimidated by Jeff’s words and gave Jeff the rest of his bananas.
Jeff snatched the bananas and hurriedly ate them without so much as a “Thank you.”
This situation continued for a long time. The other monkeys encouraged Jeff to climb the trees with them but Jeff refused. He told them, “I still get enough overripe bananas to eat.
