JARDIN ANGLAIS
At the end of the 18th century Jardins Anglais became fashionable in France. By the first half of the 19th century the New Orlean’s archival drawings document the arrival of this type of garden in Louisiana. As opposed to the formal “old style” French garden with geometric patterning and focal points, the Jardin Anglais with winding paths, emphasis on the natural landscape and points of interest gives the appearance of a less controlled natural garden. Valcour Aime’s mid 19th century garden in St. James Parish was an excellent example of this style. Ile Bétail with its lagoon and cattle dip is being developed as a Jardin Anglais.
