I introduced myself and asked if I could have a few minutes of her time to ask her some questions. Paul’s mother was very nice and even asked if I would like to share of her bamboo lunch.
I thanked her for the offer but I did not eat the bamboo. We had a nice talk and I learned a lot about zoo life and why they were having this type of Panda School.
Paul’s mother agreed with me that life in the zoo is very different than life in the forest. She told me, “We get fed regularly without having to do anything to get the food. All of the other animals that might hurt us are kept far away from us. There are very few ways we can hurt ourselves and the humans will bandage us if we do get injured. But that is about to change for some of us.”
Paul’s mother then asked if I had ever something called a “release program”. I was honest and I told her I had never heard of it. She looked at me with sad eyes and said,“That is why we must have our Panda School.”
