EXERCISE
Howard is like most of us in that “We want what we want when we want it.” If things don’t go our way, we become angry. But as you get older, you are supposed to change. You are supposed to recognize that things (grades, friends, sports and most of life) often don’t go our way. There will be times when you will not get what you want so that others can have what they want. You are going to have to learn to cope with these situations. This is all part of growing up. When someone does not learn how to cope with these situations (like Howard), we say that they are spoiled or immature.
You understand that your feelings and behaviors are caused by your thinking and that the failure to change childlike Stinky Thinking is what causes your life problems. However, changing this thinking is not always easy. Others may agree with your Stinky Thinking or you may not see that ge ng your way is going to cause you problems in the future.
Howard was able to tell himself that he did not have to do what others had to do. He was able to tell himself that others were trying to take advantage of him. He was able to tell himself that he was smarter than anyone else and did not need to listen to others. These Justifications allowed him to not question if his thinking was stinky. He failed to conduct a Reality Test of his thinking and it was this lack of a Reality Test that caused him to maintain his Stinky Thinking to the bitter end.
