at track and field
From running two miles to running through
hurdles to throwing a discus, track and field may be one of the most versatile sports around. With all these different events, track and field runners have plenty of options to choose from that will best fit their abilities. Distance runners can run up to two miles while sprinters have the 100 and 200 meters to choose from. For those more in the middle, there are also the 400 and 800 meter sprints. If throwing is more your forte, shot put and discus might be calling your name. There are also jumping events such as long jump, high jump, and triple jump.
Track meets are filled with excitement as runners get ready on the starting line to run an adrenaline-pumped race. No matter what place these athletes get, they always have fun. Maria Naclerio (10) describes her meets as “a great time. It's really tiring though - after my event I just want sleep.” Additionally, she adds, she “also (likes) cheering on my friends at their events. I think that’s my favorite part because I know it feels good when people cheer for me so I try to
do the same thing for them. Even if I don’t know someone very well or they go to a different school, I will always cheer for them,” she says, proving the presence of her Benedictine spirit.
Sarah Halabe (10) says that her favorite part of track is “going to practice and seeing my friends everyday. Even when I have a tough day I know that I will go to track and have a great time. It always makes me feel better.” When asked what her favorite moment was in track, she replied happily, “When Maria, Ashley, and Yuju ran back and forth during my 3200 (two mile) race on my birthday and sang every lap happy birthday and chanted my name.” Priory has always had a strong track and field team, built on strong dedicated members. These athletes run hard everyday, even through extreme heat or harsh rain. While many think that running is a punishment, the track and field team thinks differently. A track team that runs together sticks together. These athletes bonded and made new friendships that would never have happened if it weren’t for this sport. After a long day in school, the best way to relax and unwind is to run or sprint with friends.
