SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST (SAT)
OVERVIEW The SAT course is a popular option for students wishing to study at North
American universities. For students wishing to apply to these universities (as well
as some European and South-East Asian universities) the SAT is a key part of the
admission process.
The course runs for students in the Lower Sixth for a term, with students split into
two cohorts. Each cohort will receive SAT lessons for one term, either
September-December or January-March.
The SAT is a multiple-choice Digital English and Maths exam which lasts 2.5 hours.
It gives universities a broad and common data point system to enable universities
to compare applicants. The higher the SAT score (out of a maximum score of
1600), the more courses and universities are available to them. A student can sit
the exam multiple times and submit their highest score on their application. The
tests are held internationally in November and December, as well as at Millfield in
October, March and May.
Therefore, it is beneficial for students wishing to attend a university requiring an
SAT to sit the course. If a student is unsure about attending one of these
universities, but would like to keep their options open, it is strongly advised that
they start the SAT programme at the beginning of Lower Sixth; they can withdraw
from the course at a later date, if they subsequently decide not to apply.
A SAT score is currently highly recommended for all students wishing to take up a
sport or an academic scholarship in North America.
COURSE OUTLINE SAT lessons are offered in all four timetable blocks, and each student will be
timetabled to take one SAT English lesson and one SAT Maths lesson per week for
one term. Lessons focus on both subject knowledge and exam technique. Unlike
other exams, the SAT test is completed online, and students will be supported
through the enrollment and registration process. Drop in sessions are available for
those taking four A levels or BTEC/A level combination; however, this will be
largely self-studied. Prep is set in the same way as in other subjects. It is expected
that students will also spend an additional hour per week (minimum) in private
study in preparation for the SAT.
Students are provided with access to onine resource platforms and are assessed
regularly throughout the year, to check their learning and to help them develop
their exam technique.
Millfield is an accredited SAT Test Centre, and students can sit the SAT on site in
October, March and May of the Lower Sixth year.
