SIGNATURES SUBMITTED FOR INITIATIVE TO REPEAL WASHINGTON’S CLIMATE LAW
REPEAL EFFORT
Organizers of an initiative to repeal the Washington’s climate law turned in 418,000 signatures last week, more than enough to qualify for the November 2024 ballot. The initiative would repeal the 2021 Climate Commitment Act and end the state’s cap-and-trade auctions.
The initiative is one of six in the Let’s Go Washington campaign, funded by Redmond business- man Brian Heywood, targeting various state laws. At a news conference last week, Heywood and others criticized the climate policy for driving up fuel costs.
ROAD TO BALLOT
First, the signatures need to be verified by the Secretary of State’s office. The initiative will then go before lawmakers in the 2024 session for adoption. If lawmakers reject the measure or take no action, Initiative 2117 will go before voters on the November 2024 ballot.
OPPORTUNITY FOR REFORM
The Legislature has a chance to make some important changes to the Climate Commitment Act in order to smooth out future price increases and provide more stability, as mentioned in a recent Seattle Times editorial.
“Leaders must find ways to rein in the cost of the market’s allowances,” the Editorial Board wrote. “Washington’s latest auction, at $66.03 per metric ton of carbon, is close to double the $38.73 price of the linked cap-and-trade system between California and Quebec.”
