Science Alive! STEM Day Out
Two groups of students visited Science Alive! STEM Day Out at the Adelaide Showgrounds on Friday August 5th. Our Year 8 students explored virtual and augmented reality experiences, robot battles, live wildlife encounters, defence contractor displays, engineering challenges, and more. They enjoyed this unique opportunity to be inspired and informed! A group of Year 9-11 girls also travelled down to attend the Women in STEM seminar, which featured a panel of inspiring women working in STEM fields.
Local string group, Stringtastic, competed at the Balaklava Eisteddfod on 6th August. This group includes students from both Kadina Memorial School and Harvest Christian College, guided by music teachers Jess Charles and Cathy Nicholls. Jaeger Dennett, along with Jed Charles, played in a violin/cello duet and received an honourable mention for their performance of ‘The Sound of Silence’ and their own arrangement of ‘French Folk Song’. Monica Metcalf on cello joined Emily Carson on cello and Isabel Lemley on violin to perform ‘Mamma Mia’ and their own arrangement of ‘Lavender’s Blue’. They also received an honourable mention.
Both groups had excellent ensemble skills, expression and wonderful use of dynamics. They practised throughout Term 2 after school every Friday and during the holidays.
