Mr Scott Carson
Harvest is a wonderful place and one of its many strengths is our focus on leadership through good citizenship and service. Two of the many ways we do this is through our student leadership programs and The Rite Journey program in Year Nine. It was wonderful to witness our student leaders in action on Friday
with our House Captains and Head Prefects stepping up to the plate. They did a remarkable job, organising war cries, and students into events and then coordinating the relays and other team events at the end of the day. They showed great servanthood leadership, which is exemplified by Jesus in
the bible. Of course, leadership is both a natural quality and a learned one. People who are natural leaders, always have more to learn and people who don’t start out as leaders can learn leadership. We regularly encourage our young leaders to be responsible and to show initiative and we were super proud of how they demonstrated this on Sports Day.
Learning from our mistakes is yet another example of leadership. I spoke to a number of students this week and after guiding them through their mistakes, I encouraged them about the importance
of learning from our mistakes, and that no one is perfect. I was very encouraged to observe some heartfelt apologies from students in one of my classes this week, and even received a couple of apologies myself, without even asking. It’s important to always see light ahead and to know that when we fall off the figurative horse, we need to stand back up, dust ourselves off and get back on. This is the quality of resilience that is needed in leadership and life in general.
Gratitude is also a highly important part of leadership. Our year 9 students have written letters to their parents to express gratitude as part of our Rite Journey Program. It has been deeply touching reading through some of these letters and the level of gratitude and maturity that our year nines have displayed has been nothing short of humbling and has made our staff proud.
Proverbs 11:14 reads, ‘For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisers.’ Matthew 20:26-28: ‘Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave - just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.’
We at Harvest, strive for academic excellence, innovation in education and educational improvement. We also value servant leadership, citizenship and service learning.
A combination of these areas makes for a balanced and quality education.
