130 SPIRIT AND THE MIND
is a reality that is boundless, beyond time, infinite in dimension. The color of that which cannot be measured is blue—like the blue of the sky and the blue of the ocean. Blue is cool and calming; see, the three doctors are all wearing blue.” Everybody chuckled as we noticed that we three were indeed all wearing blue shirts.
Baba continued, “Shirdi Baba1 wore a ring at the time of his death. The color oƒ the stone in the ring was blue—the color of the infinite and boundless—and in the stone was engraved the symbol of OM, the inner reality of that which is ƒathomless. See . . .” And with that he circled the air with his precious hand and produced the treasured Shirdi ring.2 What a marvelous moment to behold—not only to hear from Baba himself about his own inner reality, but to see in the tender joyful giving of this miracle, that his love is that boundless reality. We all had a chance to touch the ring, to place it to our foreheads and to revel in the glory of that moment.
I pray to be a worthy instrument of Baba’s love—that boundless, fathomless, glorious reality which he shows us we are. I see my life’s work as trying to express his love to my utmost—bringing his reality, our true reality, into my work, and sharing it with colleagues.
What a lovely challenge. Just recently I gave a talk at the largest psychiatric hospital in San Diego and saw so many psychiatrists wiggling their feet and tapping their fingers on the table, restless and uncomfortable having to listen to spiritual matters. After the talk, as I was leaving, two young psychiatrists approached me and seriously asked, “Do you mean there really is good and bad, right and wrong?” Thank Baba! He has come just in the nick of time—helping us awaken to the importance of our role in upholding morality and dharma (righteousness).
And even though people were wiggling their feet and tapping their fingers on the table, I saw through the apparent restlessness and nonattention a marvelous gift that Baba has come to give his devotees at this time. It is a most wonderful time to be here on earth. Because while our Lord is still not well known or well understood worldwide, we have so many wonderful chances to talk about him. We have the opportunity for some small role to play, some work to do, in bringing his love into the world. And the knowledge that he cannot fail is exciting. Even though there are taps of fingers and wigglings of feet, with so many people not paying attention, I know that underneath the surface many hearts are barren,
